Q. What is a descriptive list in Archives?

A Descriptive List is a finding aid for collections in Archives.  It tells you:

  • where a collection came from
  • how it is arranged
  • what is in it.

It allows you to search within a collection.  Use either the online PDF copy, which you can search by keyword, or browse the hard copy when you visit Special Collections (hard copies cannot be borrowed).  This is helpful when you are looking for a specific item in a collection.  It also helps you assess the collection as a primary source.
