How do I consult something in Special Collections, do I have to make an appointment?

Answer

Special Collections is open Monday-Friday 10:00-16:30.

Some items must be requested in advance: items that show 'Special Collections by Request / Special Collections by Appointment' on the library catalogue and all manuscript items. Items that show 'Special Collections Reference' and microform do not need to be requested in advance.

Items from Special Collections that need to be used in the Rare Books Reading Room: Strong Room items, manuscripts, book published pre-1850, outsize and fragile items must now be requested two working days in advance.

For all other Special Collections' items submit your requests before 16:00 and they will be available the next day.

For more information about what items must be requested and to request them via the online request form see Request Special Collections & Archives.

We're also offering the following means of access to Special Collections:
  • Scan & Deliver for Special Collections' material including items in the Reference Reading Room, Microform and items that show Special Collections by Request / Special Collections by Appointment on the library catalogue.
  • Reprographic requests for manuscripts & archival material via specialcollectionsarchives@ucc.ie

Every effort will be made to fulfil scan & deliver / reprographic types of requests, but this may not always be possible due to availability, copyright restrictions, size and condition of materials. If you have any queries relating to our collections please email specialcollectionsarchives@ucc.ie. This email address is monitored regularly.
