What are serials?

Answer

The terms 'periodicals', 'serials' and 'journals' are used interchangeably in libraries, usually to mean academic or scholarly journals.

Periodical is a broad term, meaning anything that is published periodically (newspapers, magazines, newsletters or journals).

Serial is also a broad term, meaning anything that is published serially, or in a series. It is most often used to mean academic journals.

In UCC Library we use the term Journals for the most part.

Journals can be online (search eJournals/eBooks) or in print (do a title search on the catalogue)

Print journals are shelved in alphabetical order by title.
